How I Got Started with Freelancing

I started freelancing in 2021. I had no clients, no portfolio, and no idea what I was doing. But I could build things, and that was enough.

The first client

My first client came from Discord. Someone saw a bot I had built and asked if I could build one for their server. I said yes, even though I had no idea how to price my work.

I charged Rs. 5,000 for a Discord bot. It took me a week. The client was happy. I was hooked.

The first month

My first month of freelancing, I earned around Rs. 50,000. That was more than most adults in my area were earning. I was still in school.

I built Discord bots, automation scripts, and small web apps. Each project taught me something new.

What I learned

Freelancing taught me more than school ever did. I learned:

• How to communicate with clients
• How to scope projects
• How to price my work
• How to handle deadlines
• How to say no

Pricing

The hardest part of freelancing is pricing. Charge too little and you burn out. Charge too much and you lose clients.

My advice: start low, deliver quality, and raise your rates as you gain experience. Never compete on price alone.

Finding clients

Most of my clients come from:

• Discord communities
• Word of mouth
• People who see my work online

I do not use freelance platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. They take a cut and attract clients who want the cheapest option.

Should you freelance?

If you can build things and communicate clearly, freelancing is worth trying. Start with small projects, deliver on time, and ask for referrals.

It is not easy. But it is rewarding.
